Initiative Announces Petition to the Bundestag and Calls on Citizens to Sign It
Berlin, June 18, 2026 – The ProHaltefrist initiative has launched www.prohaltefrist.de, a central information and campaign platform dedicated to preserving the tax holding period for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Under the slogan “Preserve the Holding Period – Protect Savers,” the initiative brings together information, arguments, supporters, and concrete courses of action to oppose the planned abolition of the current tax exemption after a one-year holding period.
Under current law, individuals in Germany can realize tax-free gains from the sale of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies if more than twelve months elapse between the date of acquisition and the date of sale. This regulation provides legal certainty, promotes long-term wealth accumulation, and treats digital assets similarly to other private assets. However, there is currently a political debate about abolishing this holding period and taxing gains in the future regardless of the length of time the assets were held.
The ProHaltefrist initiative warns that abolishing the holding period would primarily affect private savers, young people with long-term savings plans, and Germany as a hub for innovation.
“Anyone who holds Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies for the long term is not acting as a short-term speculator, but is building wealth on their own terms. The holding period is not a tax loophole, but a proven and reliable tax framework for long-term savings.”
A particular focus of the platform is the announced petition to the Bundestag calling for the preservation of the tax holding period. The petition calls for maintaining the existing regulation under Section 23 of the Income Tax Act. In particular, the one-year holding period—after which private capital gains from crypto assets remain tax-free—should not be abolished. Furthermore, the current classification of crypto assets as “other economic assets” should be explicitly retained.
The petition was submitted to the German Bundestag on May 30 and is currently under review. As soon as it is posted on the Bundestag’s official petition platform, the public signing period will begin. The goal of the initiative is to mobilize as many supporters as possible. If 30,000 signatures are collected within the signature collection period, the petition may be considered in a public hearing by the Petitions Committee.
“What matters now is that the many citizens affected make their voices heard. Every signature helps show policymakers that long-term savings, financial responsibility, and a reliable tax framework must be protected.”
At www.prohaltefrist.de, interested parties can now learn about the current legal situation, political tax plans, the arguments for maintaining the holding period, and the petition process. The website also offers resources for supporters, the media, businesses, and communities. Citizens are encouraged to share the initiative, contact members of the Bundestag, and officially sign the petition once it goes live.
The initiative is supported by a broad alliance within the German Bitcoin and crypto community. This includes individual savers, companies, media outlets, associations, tax experts, crypto service providers, YouTubers, podcasters, influencers, and communities.
